Evoxac  (cevimeline hydrochloride) 30mg capsules

Indication(s):  Treatment of dry mouth in patients with Sjögren's syndrome.

Administration:  The usual dose of cevimeline is 30 mg orally three times a day.

Pharmacology:  Cevimeline is a cholinergic agonist which binds to muscarinic receptors. Muscarinic agonists in sufficient dosage can increase secretion of exocrine glands, such as salivary and sweat glands and increase tone of the smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts.

WebRx Editorial Notes:  Similar to Salagen (pilocarpine) in terms of mechanism of action, adverse effects, contraindications, etc. with the advantage of 3 times a day dosage instead of 4 times a day.  Contraindicated in patients with uncontrolled asthma and when miosis is undesirable, as in narrow-angle glaucoma and acute iritis.  May alter cardiac conduction and heart rate.  Should be used with caution in patients with controlled asthma, chronic bronchitis, and COPD.  May blur vision and impair depth perception.
